BETHANY, Okla. — Coming in today's game Southern Nazarene had been shutout just once and had only been swept once in a doubleheader, but Saturday both happened twice as Oklahoma Baptist swept a doubleheader away from the 16th-ranked Crimson Storm 1-0 and 8-3.
The Lady Bison's (29-13, 15-5 SAC) Ashley Clifton hit a pair of home runs for OBU as the Crimson Storm (35-10, 12-6 SAC) lost a doubleheader for the first time since Feb. 22. SNU has only lost back-to-back games three times this year and has not lost three in a row once.
Clifton scored the only run of the game in the opener when she hit her second home run of the year when she went the opposite way with a solo home run to right center. That was all the Lady Bison needed as Noelle McDowell allowed just four hits and struck out nine in the complete game shutout. McDowell moved to 15-6 on the year.
All four of SNU's hits came from different players as
Daphne Stewart,
Amy Madden,
Kacey Acker and
Shanna Buckles all recorded hits.
Jordan Simmons allowed just one run on five hits and walked just one in seven innings of work as she fell to 16-4 on the year.
SNU left six on base and nearly tied it in the third when Acker led off the inning with a double that hit just under the railing in left center. Acker advanced to third on Buckles' bunt base hit, but both were left stranded.
SNU finally got on the board in the bottom of the second of the nightcap on a ground ball by Acker that ricocheted off the pitcher and through the right side as Madden scored from second.
Kara Crawford then hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored
Keli Billups from third.
OBU got one back in the top of the third with a leadoff home run before Clifton hit her second home run of the day, a two-run shot to center, to give the Lady Bison a 3-2 lead. Sonya Beach made it a 4-2 game when she hit the second straight home run with a solo shot to left. OBU added another in the top of the sixth on a bloop fly ball to right as it took a 5-2 lead. The lady Bison followed that with a three-run jack to center field to go up 8-2.
Acker gave one run back to the Storm when she hit a two-out solo home run to straight away center to make it 8-3, but that was as close as SNU came.
Kaci Crawford's winning streak came to a close at 14 straight games as she moved to 17-4 on the year with the loss. Cassidi Henderson moved to 12-4 on the year for OBU after she allowed three runs on seven hits.
Both Jones and Acker were 2-for-3 while Acker had pair of RBIs and a run scored. Stewart was also 2-for-4.
SNU will now play at Mid-America Christian, Tuesday, for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
