Southern Nazarene opened the season with a 2-1 win over Baker

Box Score

BETHANY — It took just 15 minutes for Southern Nazarene to jump out a 2-0 lead, one that it would never give up, in a 2-1 win over Baker (Kan.) in the 2010 season opener.

The Crimson Storm (1-0) asserted themselves early, scoring in the 11th minute on a goal by Rachel Eguren when Whitney Seaton pushed forward a pass after a strong run up the field. Eguren chipped both a defender and the Baker keeper to score SNU's first goal of the season and gave the Storm a one-goal lead.

Five minutes later, in the 16th minute, Laura Pearson stepped in front of a poor throw-in by Baker. Well aimed, the header left the ball in the possession of SNU's Jackie Acevedo, who out ran the Wildcat defense and buried the ball in the back of the net for the Storm's second goal.

The second half was a balanced attack as both teams threatened back and forth, with little result. However, with 8:29 left in the game, the Baker offense penetrated the SNU defense as Christine Janssens struck down the middle and scored with a shot in the lower right corner of the goal. SNU keeper Rachel Wade barely missed a diving save.

Wade was tested, coming up with eight saves as Baker put nine of its 24 shots on goals. The Crimson Storm were more efficient, taking nine shots with four being on goal and burying two.

The Crimson Storm will now travel to in-city opponent Southwestern Christian, Aug. 31 at 3 p.m.
