Crimson Storm Earn 1-1 Draw Against Newman

Junior Duran scores late equalizer as Southern Nazarene holds off the Jets at Wes Harmon Field

BETHANY, Okla. - Southern Nazarene battled to a hard fought 1-1 draw against Newman University on Thursday evening at Wes Harmon Field, as a late goal from Junior Duran helped the Crimson Storm end the match in a draw.

The opening half saw both sides exchange chances, but neither could find the breakthrough. Luis Urquiza fired the first look for Southern Nazarene (4-2-2, 2-0-1 GAC), followed by a strong attempt from Braxton Decker that forced Jets (4-1-3, 1-0-1 MIAA) keeper Francisco Pinochet into an early save. Diego Zamora also tested the defense with a shot, while Aimar Aramendia came up solid in goal for the Storm, keeping Newman off the board. The two teams went into the break locked in a scoreless battle.

After halftime, Southern Nazarene continued to push forward as Urquiza and Lucas Beja each put shots on target, only to see Pinochet deny both efforts. On the other end, Aramendia came up big with a stop on Cameron Schroder, but the Jets eventually broke through to take a 1-0 lead midway through the second half.

The Crimson Storm continued to fight and created one final chance with time winding down. With less than a minute left, Duran buried the equalizer off an assist from Mourad Siaka, salvaging a 1-1 draw for SNU.

Southern Nazarene will return to Wes Harmon Field on Saturday, October 4th, at 3:30 PM to take on No. 13 Fort Hays State.
