Storm Fall to McKendree in NCAA Tournament

SNU battles in double overtime, but falls short to the Bearcats, 1-0

LEBANON, Illi. - The No. 5 seeded Storm hit the road to take on No. 4 seeded McKendree in the second round of the NCAA DII Men's Soccer tournament. A double overtime thriller fell in favor of the Bearcats, defeating the Storm, 1-0.

Southern Nazarene (14-4-2, 10-2 GAC) met the McKendree Bearcats (11-2-6, 8-1-4 GLVC) for the first time in history during the NCAA Super Region 3 match. McKendree earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament after finishing 4th in the GLVC. The Bearcats were knocked off in their conference tournament to top-seeded Illinois- Springfield. This led them to meet the Crimson Storm who earned an automatic bid to the tournament after capturing the GAC Tournament Championship.

The two squads battled the entire first half trading possessions and shots. Both teams played lock-down defense making it difficult for either team to put a ball in the back of the net. The Bearcats led the offensive side of things with eight shots, while the Crimson Storm collected six. Both teams struggled to get a rhythm offensively leaving the score at 0-0 going into halftime.

The second half mirrored the first with both teams battling defensively. SNU led the second half with five shots, while McKendree had four. Neither team could seem to squeeze one past the other's defense making it difficult to break the silence on the scoreboard. This led the match to go into overtime to try to break the tie.

The story remained the same as both squads struggled to break the other's defense. The Crimson Storm controlled most of the first overtime period recording the only shots taken. They collected five shots while they shut out the Bearcats on the other end. Unfortunately, the McKendree defense continued to make things difficult and kept SNU off the board leading to a second overtime period.

SNU continued to shoot hoping they could break the scoreless match open. The Bearcats utilized the 8th minute of the second 10-minute overtime to break the tie. This gave the Crimson Storm a little under three minutes to respond, but they ultimately came up short. The Bearcats walked off the field defeating Southern Nazarene 1-0 in a double-overtime thriller.

The Storm collected a hefty 21 shots in the match while McKendree only had 13. Bruno Ferreira led the SNU offense with four shots while Daniel Trojman collected two shots on goal. The Crimson Storm bring their remarkable season to a close on the road in the second round of the NCAA DII Men's Soccer Tournament.
