OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene faced a tough battle Wednesday evening, falling to Oklahoma Christian 3-1 in their non-conference matchup.
The Eagles' (1-1, 0-0 LSC) victory was delivered by a 19 shot and eight shot on goal performance, while the Storm (1-2, 0-0 GAC) trailed behind with a total of eight shots and five shots on goal for the match.
The Eagles made it onto the board first in the first three minutes, after a low center shot would hit the back of the net, giving OC the early 1-0 lead.
SNU fired a round of shots later in the first half, courtesy of Kaitlyn Deaton and freshman phenom Kenzie Macklin, but none would land a score.
Freshman Maya Pomeroy sparked the SNU offense with her shot to the back, tying the match at one a piece. The attacking game grew cold, but OC broke the silence in the 34th minute as the Eagles found an opening at the top of the goal, heading into the half up 2-1.
OC kept their intensity moving into the second half, taking shot after shot until one would give them their third score of the evening.
Much of the offensive scene between the two teams quieted down the remainder of the match. SNU was able to try one more shot in the final minutes, but the Eagle goalie kept the defense alive, and OC walked away with the 3-1 victory.
Head Coach Josh Smith continued to prove his recruiting class was bringing a spark to the program as freshman Maya Pomeroy led the offense for SNU with her first collegiate score to add to her two shots and two shots on goal finish.
Kenzie Macklin also added to SNU's offensive agenda with her three shots and two shots goal. Returner Isabella Kingsakongthong chipped in one shot on goal for the evening.
The Storm will have their home debut Saturday, September 3rd where they will host Newman for another non-conference match beginning at 1:00 p.m.
