LAKELAND, Fla.— After their loss to Embry-Riddle in game one of their Florida trek, the Southern Nazarene Men's soccer team switched gears Monday night as they took down the Florida Southern Mocs 3-2 late in overtime.
Although the Mocs outshot the Storm 24-13, having 11 on target compared to the SNU's 5, the Storm's defensive presence outlasted FSC's as Ramiro Jimenez tallied a total of nine saves on the night.
It was an intense match throughout, seen in the 14 fouls called on both teams and the four yellow cards given. The score sat still most of the night with FSC putting a point on the board and SNU answering right back thereafter. The tables seemed to turn when the Mocs gained the 2-1 lead right at the 65 minute mark, but SNU's Nathaniel Mederos surprised Florida Southern with a goal just past the 81 minute mark granting the match an extra period.
Time was ticking while the score was gridlocked at 2-2 in overtime. Down to the three minute marker, SNU's Harei Maeda ends the match with the awaited Golden Goal, propelling the Storm to victory in Lakeland.
Mederos had an impressive performance tallying across the boards with one of the Storm's three goals and one assist. Esteban Ramirez also was a spark for SNU adding two shots with one of them striking the back of the net. Daniel Trojman tallied two shots with one on target for the Storm.
The Storm look to maintain this energy as they head back to Bethany to host Southwest Baptist on their home turf Thursday, September 9th.
