Storm claim first victory as they shutout Falcons 3-1 in late second half surge

ODESSA, Texas — What doesn't happen in the first half can always come around in the second. This is true for the Southern Nazarene University Women's Soccer team as they claimed the 3-1 road victory against University of Texas Permian Basin, tallying their first win of the 2021 season.

A scoreless first half for both teams would quickly turn around in the second as SNU (1-5) managed to sink three goals to UTPB's one all scored past the 60th minute. The Storm out-shot the Falcons (0-4) by just one (23-22) but had 16 on target to the Falcons' 10.

The first period was a battle for both as neither team could seem to find a rhythm. Ten minutes into the second, the Falcons were the first to strike, putting the score at 1-0. That was the last time they would find the back of the net that night as SNU harnessed a second half surge starting just beyond the 62nd minute.

SNU's Alejandra Andrade sunk one in first for the Storm making it 1-1 with just under 30 left to play. A couple shots later and the score was gridlocked. SNU would push through as Karla Ramirez scores her first of the season putting SNU up 2-1 with ten minutes remaining. Not even a minute had gone by and Kaitlyn Deaton finds Andrade and she drills the third and final goal for the Storm.

UTPB couldn't match the the Storm's dominance and time would run out giving SNU their first win this season.

Andrade continued her outstanding play tallying eight shots with five of those on target and drilling two of SNU's three goals on the night. Deaton also added to the energy with eight shots with six of those on goal and one assist. Ramirez stepped up big for the Storm as she tallied two shots with one of those adding a point on the board for the Storm. Other notables were Eden Holetzky, Sara Nichols, and Isabella Kingsakongthong who each had one shot and one shot on goal.

In goal, Eliya Alvidrez gave a great defensive effort notching eight saves on the night.

SNU will start conference play September 30th where they will host Ouachita Baptist on their home field with kickoff set for 6 p.m.
