SHAWNEE, Okla. – After an unprecedented 2020 year with many implications, the Southern Nazarene Women's Soccer team (2-5-1, 1-4-1 GAC) fought their way through a tough 2021 spring season and deep into the Great American Conference playoffs. For the first time since the 2014 season, SNU reached the tournament's Semis as they'd be matched up against the Ouachita Baptist Tigers (8-3-0, 4-2-0 GAC) on a cool Thursday afternoon in Shawnee.
OBU put a stop to the Crimson Storms's improbable postseason as they beat SNU 3-0.
Many pegged Southern Nazarene to not have a chance in the tournament after being named the 6th seed, but a 3-2 double-OT win against No. 3 SWOSU in the first round surprised most.
The Tigers came out firing as they finished with a 21-10 shot advantage, 11 of their shots hitting on target. SNU registered only five on goal while also picking up seven total fouls.
In the first half, Ouachita struck first with a goal in the match's first six minutes. SNU struggled to get into a rhythm for the remaining moments of the half as the score read 1-0 going into recess.
The case was the same in the second half as the Storm held off the OBU offense until the Tigers slipped in two more goals in the remaining four minutes of the game.
Freshman Josie Van Pelt and Delaney Stewart each fired a team-high three shots as two of Stewart's attempts hit on target. Nikki Lohr tried twice, hitting one on target, while Saira Zamarripa and Alejandra Andrade each registered one try.
In goal, Maci Attalla faced 21 total shots as the Crimson Storm struggled to keep the Tigers off their side of the field. Attala tallied eight saves in the contest.
Today's loss will conclude Southern Nazarene's 2021 post-season as they will graduate two seniors, Rebecca Moore and Hanna Arthur. SNU will look to next season with optimism as all, but two will return to the field.
