TAHLEQUAH, OK – The Southern Nazarene Men's soccer team traveled to Tahlequah on Friday evening, coming off a momentous 3-0 win over Ouachita Baptist on Tuesday. However, tonight's matchup didn't favor the Storm (1-1, 1-1 GAC), as the Riverhawks (1-0, 1-0 GAC) came away with a 2-1 win.
There was a total of 20 fouls in this physical contest and a couple of yellow cards given out. The Riverhawks would fire the most shots on the evening as they tallied 12 to the six of SNU. Of those shots, NSU landed seven on target while the Storm registered three on goal.
The Riverhawks would also take more corner shots at a 3-2 margin.
Northeastern didn't waste much time getting the ball in the net as a shot in the 27th minute of play granted them a score and a 1-0 lead. A stingy Crimson Storm defense denied the Riverhawks any leeway until late.
Sophomore defender Eric Romero made matters interesting as he scored his first goal of the season at the 66:26 mark to tie the game at 1-1. SNU's defensive wall could no longer hold as NSU managed to score late and come away with a victory.
Statistically, Romero would lead the Storm as he registered the only SNU score of the night on his first attempt. Juan Rodarte would fire two shots with one being on target while Orlando Castro would post the same stats.
Southern Nazarene will look to next Saturday as they will play host to Fort Hayes State (0-0, 0-0 GAC) in the 2021 home opener at Wes Harm Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
