Men's Golf Ninth MSSU Fall Invite
SNU Athletics
MONKEY ISLAND, Okla - The field is as strong as ever at the Missouri Southern State University fall men's golf invitational, and for the fourth year in a row, that field includes the Southern Nazarene University Crimson Storm.
With good conditions in which to play, the Crimson Storm took on the field, and the Shangri-La Country Club course, finishing the first day's play in 9th place with a team score of 585. The lead is held by Oklahoma Christian University at 564, but the second round was not completed in full. Two players did not finish their round individually, so they will complete their round on Tuesday morning before the re-pairing of the field and the resumption of play.
In the first round, the Crimson Storm got solid performances out of their top three players. JD Pitts, and
Ondrej Melichar each posted rounds of even-par 72.
Jacob Grellner was 1-over par at 73 in the first round, and Saxon Ross (80, +10) and
Zander Tway (82, +12) rounded out the SNU lineup. The Crimson Storm were 11th after the first round of play, but they were within seven strokes of five teams ahead of them on the leaderboard.
After a slow start as a team in the first round, the Crimson Storm went low in round two with Melichar and Tway leading the way. The duo combined to post a total score of 7-under par in the round, and they notched 11 birdies and an eagle between them. Tway fired a 3-under par 69 with back-to-back birdies on the third and fourth holes, and additional birdies on the 12th, 14th, and 17th holes. Melichar had two hot stretches of play, as he birdied three of the first four holes on the front nine, and he posted three birdies and an eagle between holes 12 and 16 on his way to a 68 that moved him to 4-under par for the tournament and into a second place tie, three shots off the pace. Pitts (75) and Grellner (76) were the other two counting scores for SNU, and Ross (82) rounded out the lineup.
The tournament will conclude with a single, 18 hole round on Tuesday.
