BETHANY, Okla. - The Southern Nazarene University Women's soccer team was unable to win a second half shootout against the Hillcats of Rogers State University on Saturday afternoon at Wes Harmon Field. There were a total of seven goals scored between the two teams in the second period.
The Hillcats (3-1) shot often and early, with 15 of their 26 shots being taken in the first half of the matchup. The Crimson Storm (1-3) were not able to register any shots during the opening period, but the exceptional defensive play by junior goalkeeper
Ashlynn Pritchett prevented eight shots from finding pay dirt.
The first goal of the night came by Laurelle Theodore in the 6th minute of the matchup. It was a tough defensive battle until the second period when
Sydney Davenport broke the seal for the SNU with a goal, assisted by Alejandre Andrade in the 50th minute. It didn't take long for RSU to answer with Anita Gaspar notching the first of her two goals in the 51st minute.
Alejandre Andrade added to her stat line when she dribbled her way into a goal in the 80th minute of play, but that is when the shootout began in earnest. Kori Watters of RSU was next the put the ball into the net less than 2 minutes later.
Karsyn Matthews was then able to notch her second goal of the year in the 81st minute. However, the tandem of Anita Gasper and Laurelle Theodore proved to be too much for the Storm as they each scored goals of their own in the last minutes of the game.
Southern Nazarene will be back home Thursday, at 5 p.m., to take on the Eagles of Oklahoma Christian University (0-4).
