BETHANY, Okla. - A perfect night for soccer saw the Men of Southern Nazarene University fall just short of a win. A hard fought game with the Patriots of Dallas Baptist left SNU with one fewer goal than their opponent at the match's end.
SNU (1-3) was in a defensive dog fight from the start of the match until the end. The Storm just edged their opponents in shots taken with 11, four of those being on goal. DBU (1-2) put together eight shots with each one of these being on target.
Austin Meza, of Dallas Baptist, was able to score the first goal of the competition in 7th minute of play. Soon after,
Sergio Diaz would hit the first of his two goals on the night off an assist from
Angel Lopez. This gave Lopez his third assist on the year. The match took on an aggressive tone as there were 46 fouls whistled in the match.
The second period was very evenly matched up until the Patriots took the advantage with a penalty goal made by Johnathan Macias in the 76th minute of the matchup. Only a few seconds later, DBU were able to score with the help of Abraham Garcia. The Storm were able to add a goal of their own by
Sergio Diaz, assisted by
Guy Esquivel, but proved to not be enough to lessen the gap of the matchup. DBU edged the Storm 3-2.
Southern Nazarene will be back at home Thursday, to open up conference play against Ouachita Baptist (0-3). The match is slated to kick off at 7 p.m.
