Senior Night Blues

Southern Nazarene fell to Newman 7-2 on Saturday Night

BETHANY - Southern Nazarene (2-15-1, 1-12-1 GAC) had their Senior Night and Homecoming spoiled as they fell to Newman University (9-6-1, 8-5-1 GAC) in a gut-wrenching 7-2 loss on Saturday night at Wes Harmon Field.

This was the last time that seven seniors would grace Wes Harmon field with their presence. Joao Padovan, Erik Fernandez, Gerald Ngwa, Jovanny Hernandez, Deigo Rojas, Ricardo Vargas, and Jhon Mareus laced their cleats up for the final time.

Newman walked in like a team focused on scoring and they did just that. By halftime, the Jets had scored six times leaving the score at 6-0. Soon after the break, the Jets would enter the net again with a shot from Carlos Bellosta Manchon in the 56th minute of the contest. The Storm would answer with a score from Freshman Alessandro Alfaro, the first of his career, in the 81st minute of play. A little over a minute later, Alessandro Alfaro would assist Sophomore Jax Taylor in a score, the first of his career, at the 82nd minute mark.

Coach Trevor Harmon took advantage of the second half and allowed for a few unfamiliar faces to make an appearance. There were sparks of positivity as the Storm held the Jets to only one goal in the second half play.

Statistically for the Storm, Jhon Mareus and Guy Esquivel led the attack with two shots apiece. Sergio Diaz, Angel Lopez, and Alessandro Alfaro would follow close behind taking one shot each.

Southern Nazarene ends their season tonight, but can hold their heads up high knowing that this team is full of talent and will have next season to prove so.
