BETHANY, Okla. — For the second straight season Southern Nazarene took down Upper Iowa at Wes Harmon Field, but this time came from behind to take the win in a 2-1 fashion on Saturday afternoon.
Despite sitting out most of their starters for the entire first half, the Crimson Storm (4-8) kept the Peacocks (3-5-2) off the board heading into the break. SNU out-shot UIU 12-8 for the game, and had three more saves as well. The Storm placed four shots on goal for the match while the Peacocks fired six on target.
Upper Iowa got on the board first in the 52
nd minute to take the 1-0 lead before head coach
Trevor Harmon decided to sub some of the starters into the game. That paid dividends for SNU as senior
Marcel Joseph notched his third goal of the season in the 71
st minute to tie the game 1-1. Later in the half, Joseph found freshman
Elian Pineda inside the box and Pineda fired a rocket past the UIU for his first goal of the season.
The goal proved to be the game-winner as the Crimson Storm went on to snap a three-game losing skid.
Joseph finished with one goal, one assist, and two shots on goal in the match while
Angel Lopez finished with one assist. Lopez has now tallied at least one assist in five of his last six games.
Freshman
Carlos Castellanos made his first start in goal for Southern Nazarene and had a fine outing. He finished with five saves, a couple of which were crucial stops down the stretch of the match.
Southern Nazarene hits the road for Arkansas next week as the Crimson Storm have matches on Thursday night against Harding and Saturday afternoon against Ouachita Baptist.
