Storm beat Ouachita 3-1, now tied at the top of GAC standings

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — For the first time in school history and joining the Great American Conference, Southern Nazarene has swept the season series with Ouachita Baptist with a 3-1 win on Saturday afternoon.

The win also puts the Crimson Storm (5-9, 3-2 GAC) tied at the top of the GAC standings entering the final conference game of the season next week. SNU out-shot the Tigers (5-5-1, 3-2 GAC) 17-13 for the match, as they landed 11 of those on goal.

Junior Cristian Hernandez had a huge afternoon for SNU as he finished with two goals. He put all six of his shot attempts on goal in the match as he individually fired more shots on goal than the Tigers who finished with five.

Cutter Smith netted a goal as well for the Storm as the senior finished with four shots in the match. Marcel Joseph tallied an assist and finished with two shots on goal, while Brayden Lovelace and Bojan Tolmac each recorded a shot on goal as well. Carlos Castellanos recorded four saves in goal for SNU in the match.

Ouachita Baptist took the 1-0 lead in the 12th minute, as Blain Hickman netted a goal for the Tigers. Smith scored his second goal of the season in the 20th minute to tie the game 1-1.

After halftime, Joseph found Hernandez who scored his third goal of the season to put SNU up 2-1 in the 57th minute. Hernandez notched his fourth goal on the year in the 89th minute to seal the victory for the Crimson Storm.

Southern Nazarene returns home to Wes Harmon Field on Tuesday night for their final GAC match of the regular season against rival Oklahoma Baptist. If the Crimson Storm can win that match, they will enter a tiebreaker scenario for hosting the GAC Championships with Harding, Ouachita Baptist, or both.
