Storm Fall in Conference Opener

Southern Nazarene loses to Fort Hays State 2-1 in double overtime in the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association Conference opener

Box Score HAYS, Kan. — A goal by Blake Rodgers in the final minute helped force double overtime for Southern Nazarene University, but Fort Hays State got the last say in a 2-1 win.

The Crimson Storm (1-4, 0-1 MIAA) dropped its opening Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association contest against a Tigers team (4-1, 1-0 MIAA) that reached the NCAA tournament a season ago.

"We fought hard," SNU Head Coach George Schroeder said. "We made some mistakes on defense that really hurt us, but our effort was good. We still have some guys that are injured that we need to get back."

Both teams struggled to find offense until Austin Clifton scored his first goal of the season for the Tigers in the 74th minute to give Fort Hays State the 1-0 lead. SNU was unable to answer until the 90th minute when Javier Caballeros fired a shot on the crossbar that resulted in an assist to Blake Rodgers as he headed in the rebound to tie the game at 1-1. The Storm and Tigers battled all the way up to the 109th minute when Diego Cabral rebounded a missed shot and fired it into the lower right corner of the goal to give the Tigers the 2-1 win.

SNU attempted nine shots and three of those shots were on goal. Fort Hays State took 27 shots and 11 of those were on frame. Tyler Wythe recorded 9 saves for the Storm.

Next up SNU will travel to Harding for its second MIAA game Thursday at 1 p.m.
