CLAREMORE — One might wonder how deep is the well that Southern Nazarene keeps going back to in Jackie Acevedo. The junior again pulled the Crimson Storm out and scored both of SNU's goals in a 2-1 win over Rogers State in the first round of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament.
Rogers State was the source of the Crimson Storm's (10-8-1) first conference loss of the season, and the fourth seed in the SAC tournament. The Crimson Storm's underdog victory takes them to top-seeded and conference champion Oklahoma City Tuesday, for the SAC Tournament semifinals.
SNU controlled possession for a majority of the first half against an aggressive Hillcat team. Ten minutes into the first half, Acevedo stripped the ball from a RSU defender and dribbled into the box. One-on-one against the keeper, she pushed the ball into the lower left-hand corner, putting SNU up 1-0. The Storm continued to defend well for the remainder of the first half and held on to the 1-0 lead.
SNU had taken six shots in the first period, two of which were on goal. RSU had taken four, three of which were on goal.
The second half displayed more equal play between the two teams. Just 15 minutes into the period, RSU's Jessica Turner lifted the ball over Rachael Wade's head into the goal to tie the game at 1-1. SNU responded 12 minutes later Tatiane Carvalho dribbled the ball into the box from the left side, passed across to Kelsey Godfrey and Jackie Acevedo. The RSU keeper found herself out of position and Acevedo put the ball into the net to score the game-winning goal.
The Crimson Storm took 25 total shots, with 11 on goal, while the Hillcats had only seven shots, but put four on goal.
Wade posted four saves while Chelsea McMullin was tested by the Crimson Storm as she recorded 10 saves.
No game time has been set for the semifinal game at Oklahoma City.
