SNU picked up its first SAC win on the road at John Brown

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. — Southern Nazarene scored two goals in the second half and got a golden goal from Jackie Acevedo in overtime to upset No. 18 John Brown, 4-3, Saturday afternoon. Acevedo also scored two goals in regulation to net a hat trick.

It is the first victory over the Golden Eagles for the Crimson Storm (4-5, 1-1 SAC) in the last three years.

The game began poorly for the Crimson Storm, as JBU's Cam Martin struck a long shot from 20 yards out that sailed over Rachael Wade's head to put the Golden Eagles up by a goal. SNU struggled the rest of the first half, with JBU attacking consistently. The half ended with SNU down in every category, with only four shots, two on goal, to JBU's seven, five on goal. The Golden Eagles also took five corner kicks, while the Crimson Storm did not take any.

The second half saw a rebirth of the SNU offense. Jackie Acevedo scored the first SNU goal 12 minutes into the half with an assist by Kayla Thompson.

The Golden Eagles struck back.

Wade went out of the game injured after a JBU player slid into her chest mid-way through the second period. The Golden Eagles took advantage of the Storm's weakness in goal as Natiel Bauer and Ashley Cochran each put a ball in the back of the SNU net, to take a 3-1 lead with just eight minutes remaining in the game.

The Crimson Storm refused to back down, however, and Acevedo scored her second goal on a scrappy run down the right side of the field, threading her way through the defense, narrowing the score to 3-2. Six minutes later, with less than a minute on the clock, Kira Dowis knocked in a high bouncing ball to tie the game and sent it into overtime.

Overtime began with several attacks from the Golden Eagles, though all were managed by Bruna Da Cas, filling in as keeper with Wade out of the game. Then, seven minutes into the first overtime, Acevedo, on a beautiful through-ball from Thompson, shot the ball over the JBU keeper's left shoulder and into the net to score the game-winning goal.

The Crimson Storm had 12 shots on the afternoon, nine of which were on goal.

The Crimson Storm now travel to OBU Tuesday for a 1 p.m. Sooner Athletic Conference game.
