Rogers State just edged SNU in the SAC opener

Box Score

BETHANY — Getting clean looks and seeing opportunities hasn't been an issue for Southern Nazarene this season yet finding the back of the net has been. It was the same story Tuesday night as the Crimson Storm were shutout 1-0 by Rogers State.

The Crimson Storm (1-5-0, 0-1-0 SAC) dropped their first conference opener since 2003 and lost to the Hillcats (7-1-1, 1-0-0 SAC) for the first time in school history.

All it took was one goal in the 24th minute by Sergio Guerra on a penalty kick to give RSU the win. SNU had a chance to tie the match just eight minutes later when Robert Nakaya was awarded a penalty kick. Nakaya went for the bottom right corner, but Sean Surridge made the diving save, one of three, to keep the shutout.

Kenton Farris recorded one save for SNU.

RSU out shot the Crimson Storm 15-12 and put two on goal. SNU out shot the Hillcats 9-6 in the second half and put three total shots on goal.

SNU had several opportunities to score, including another rocket blast by Ryan Allen who nearly snuck in a 40-yard goal in the top right corner in the second half, but Surridge made the leaping save. SNU again was just inches away on a goal late in the second half when Issac Juarez lofted up a cross on a corner kick from the right side to Blake Rodgers who just missed knotting the game at 1-1 when played the cross just to the left of the far post.

The Crimson Storm now hit the road to Arkansas to take on John Brown, Saturday, for a 3 p.m. contest.
