CoSIDA Academic All-America List

BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene's
Sam Smith became just the second player in school history to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American in softball as the College Sports Information Directors of American released their Academic All-America Division II Softball Team.

The junior was named to the second team and earned a 4.0 GPA in mathematics education. Smith was a GAC All-Academic Team selection in 2015 and was a Crafton Tull Elite Scholar this year. She ranked 22nd in Division II and was tied for fourth in the GAC for home runs at the end of the season. She was also ranked second in the GAC in runs scored, fifth in stolen bases, seventh in total bases with 88 and seventh in walks with 23. She stands sixth all-time in school history in home runs, eighth in stolen bases and ninth in slugging percentage. Smith also stands sixth in school history for home runs in a single-season and fourth in stolen bases in a single-season.

Smith is the sixth overall CoSIDA Academic All-America choice at Southern Nazarene. She was one of 33 players to be named to this years list from across all of Division II and was one of five from the Great American Conference.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution, be nominated by his/her sports information director and be named Academic All-District First Team.
