RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — While you can't exactly call them the conference champions, it's about as close as you can get as Southern Nazarene tied East Central and Arkansas Tech for the best record in the Great American Conference.
The Crimson Storm (6-7, 5-1 GAC) gave Arkansas Tech its first GAC loss of the season as SNU slid by the Central Region's ninth-ranked Golden Suns (10-5, 5-1 GAC). The win guarantees a three-way tie at the top of the GAC standings as ECU and ATU finish at 5-1 as well.
Southern Nazarene got off to a great start taking No. 1 and 2 doubles.
Masha Andrianova and
Marina Shipilova held on to their No. 4 ranking in the region and pulled out an 8-6 win at No. 1.
Deisi Bolivar and
Natalia Moreno continued to roll with their fifth straight match as a team in an 8-2 win. The Golden Suns won at No. 3, 8-4.
It was a battle of two top 10 region players at No. 1 singles as No. 6 Andrianova upset No. 4 Bohdana Sardak, 6-1, 6-1. Bolivar improved to 11-1 on the year in singles and won her 10
th straight with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2. ATU won at No. 3 and 4 as Moreno lost 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3 and Shipilova went the full three sets at No. 4 falling 6-1, 1-6, 6-1. Kotova nearly swept at No. 5 winning 6-0, 6-1. Kim Wiedemann also lost 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
The Crimson Storm now get set for the final home match Wednesday when it hosts Oklahoma Baptist.
