Box Score BETHANY, Okla. — Adam Bohac is used to winning. The fourth-year head coach at Southern Nazarene finished the 2010-11 season with more wins in the first three seasons than any other coach in school history and that included two different coaches who took teams to the NAIA Championship game.
Despite the success, there has been one team that has eluded Bohac and staff, and that was Oklahoma Baptist. Bohac finally got that proverbial monkey off his back Saturday night by taking down undefeated and No. 1 Oklahoma Baptist with a 69-67 victory in overtime.
“I am so proud of these guys because these two teams tonight really played hard,” said Bohac. “Neither team shot well and there were plenty of turnovers, but that's the type of game these two teams play when they meet because they battle all game. It was good to finally get on the right side this time.”
The Crimson Storm (13-4, 6-3 SAC) had not defeated the Bison (15-1, 8-1 SAC) since the 2007-08 season, the year before Bohac took the helm, but SNU got key buckets and the right time and hit free throws late to seal the win.
OBU held its biggest lead of the half at 54-47 with 8:08 left to play after going on a 9-0 run and looked to be running away. The Storm though got a free throw and a jumper by
Daniel White and then a layup by
Robert Brewer to cut it to 54-52 with 1:20 left. Heath McKay put the Bison up four with 23 seconds left on a pair of free throws, but
Horace McGloster buried a trey to put SNU within one at 56-55 with just 14 seconds to play. OBU's David Johnson hit the back end of two free throws with nine seconds remaining on the clock as OBU led 57-55.
Ryan Aaron, who suffered an ankle injury earlier in the week and didn't play in Thursday's loss to Saint Gregory's, took the ball from coast to coast and missed an off balance layup, but McGloster was right there with the tip in to tie the game and force overtime.
OBU had just one lead in overtime at 62-61, but SNU scored five straight to lead 66-62. The Bison cut it to 67-66 later in OT when McKay hit all three free throws, but
Jon West answered with a pair from the line to make it 69-66, SNU, with four seconds left. The Storm fouled on the inbound pass and OBU hit the first of two free throws and tried to intentionally miss the second, but missed the rim and gave the ball back to SNU. The Storm evaded a foul in the final two seconds to scored the upset win.
Tyrone Lyons finished with a game-high 16 points and pulled down eight boards on the night as he went 6-for-10 from the field and 4-for-5 from the charity stripe. He also had two blocks and two steals. West scored 14 points and had four assists while Aaron scored 11. Aaron was still a question mark going into the game as he was in a boot just two days earlier at Saint Gregory's, but hit two crucial threes to keep momentum going for SNU at different points of the night.
“For us to be any good we have to have everyone step up like they did tonight,” said Bohac. “It's never going to be a one man show with this team. We just don't have that type of team and it's fun. When we play together and play that hard we have a chance. It was nice to have the students back and have that great environment tonight as well.”
White and McGloster also finished with nine points while White had four rebounds and McGloster had six.
Southern Nazarene will now get set to host Oklahoma City, Thursday, for an 8 p.m. conference game.
